Most English words
are made up of smaller elements: roots, prefixes and suffixes. When you know
the common ones and how to combine them, you can understand hundreds of different
words.
The majority of academic vocabulary uses Latin
roots and affixes. (Affixes are prefixes and suffixes.) They are especially useful for English university study or professional work.

Look at Word Parts to Learn New Words
If you already speak a Latin-based language like French, Spanish, Italian, or Portuguese, you have a huge advantage in reading academic English.
If not, you can still increase your vocabulary faster by studying roots and affixes.
As you study them you see will notice common patterns and recognize new words.
It’s easier to learn words in groups. Studying related words together helps you see the connections between them. That’s why I include so much information on the words made from each root.
The sections below on roots, prefixes and suffixes link to pages with details or practice.
Roots
To study roots, see:
To practice words from a particular root, use the root words table above to find the right page or pages.
- 50 Word Roots from Latin
- English Words from the Latin Root Ponere.
- Power Words (from the roots Domus and Dominari) and its practice: British Power
- Classical Roots Crossword & Answers (right click to download), and
As you read new words, analyze them. Are parts familiar? Can you see a pattern?
For example, if you read about a retractable blade, you can guess its meaning before you look it up.
(Even better: guess instead of looking it up if its meaning isn’t essential.
Don’t break your concentration unless you need the word to understand what you’re reading. If not, write it down to check later.)
For retractable, you may know that the prefix ‘re’ means ‘again’ or ‘back.’ ‘Able’ means that something is possible. So you can guess ‘retractable’ is about the possibility of ‘tracting’ something back, or again.
‘Tract’ is also the base of ‘attract,’ ‘distract,’ and ‘traction,’ so it seems related to a pulling movement. Good guess! In fact, retractable wheels on an airplane can be pulled back into the body of the plane. Retractable hose is easy to rewind (pull back into storage.) Retractable awnings can be pulled back easily.
Here’s another example of how prefixes and suffixes can change the meaning and use of a root. These words come from ‘form’:
form, form, form, form, form, form, form, form, form, form, form, conform, form, form form, form
Prefixes and Suffixes
Positive & Negative Prefixes
Practice prefixes of location and relationship (anti-, com-, ex-, in-, sub-, sym-, and trans- +) on 7+ Common Prefixes that Dominate Academic Vocabulary. The Prefix ‘Re-‘ has its own page, with examples and practice.
The Negative
Prefix List gives prefixes that make words negative. It has examples of each prefix and explains the
differences in their meanings and use. Check your understanding on the Practice Negative Prefixes page.
Suffixes: Useful Word Endings
Suffixes sometimes change the meanings of words. More often they change their positions in a sentence. It’s very helpful to know the different endings that belong to different parts of speech. Adding an ending can change a word from one part of speech into another.
For example, adding ‘-ive’ to ‘act’ (a noun or verb) makes the adjective ‘active.’ If you add’ -ly’ to ‘active’ you get the adverb ‘actively.’ You could add ‘-ate’ instead to get the verb ‘activate.’
Each suffix means something different and fills a different place in a sentence.
If you recognize more suffixes, you’ll understand more of what you read. You’ll also be able to use the words correctly when you write.

Would you like a simpler, more organized way to learn the essentials for using roots and affixes?
The most efficient way to learn common roots and affixes is with a step-by-step course. This inexpensive course will teach you the most common prefixes, suffixes, and roots. You’ll get the background you need to continue learning them as you keep reading in English.
Whether you take a course or study a few at a time, learning common roots, prefixes, and suffixes is worth the effort. Knowing how they combine can help you recognize hundreds of new English words!

Worksheets to Boost Vocabulary
These root, prefix and suffix worksheets can help you learn and practice the most common and useful word parts that build English vocabulary.
This is one of the fastest ways to increase your English vocabulary. They will help you recognize the meanings of so many related words!
You’ve probably noticed how many pages on EnglishHints teach these roots and affixes (prefixes and suffixes). They are important to study because they can make such a difference to your vocabulary!
Now I’ve taken some of the most useful lessons & prefix and suffix worksheets and combined them into self-study packets.
That way, you can download them to practice and refer to whenever you need them. (It’s so much easier than trying to find a page you want to check or review later!)
First there’s a completely new set of root, prefix and suffix worksheets: an Introduction to Roots and Affixes. It gives a simple, step-by-step approach to understanding suffixes, common prefixes, and several important word roots.
These are the root, prefix and suffix worksheets I would recommend. They’d be useful for anyone trying to learn the basics of English word construction.
There’s also a three-lesson version of that introduction if you need something shorter or less expensive. It concentrates on the prefix and suffix worksheets, with just a few roots that show how the prefixes and suffixes are used.
Below that, I’ve included root, prefix and worksheets separately (starting with suffixes), in case you want to concentrate on them one at a time.
They are based on pdfs I had made for classrooms, but I’ve redesigned them for individual study now.
For the full benefits of learning roots and affixes, get the combined study guide with all these packets for $12.00 (a 20%+ discount). See the bottom of the page.
You
will need Adobe or another pdf reader to download these pdfs. If you do not have
Adobe Reader you can download it, free, here.
Introduction to Roots & Affixes
These five simple, step-by-step lessons will help you understand and practice the basics of English word construction: prefixes, suffixes, and roots.
Increase your vocabulary quickly by learning how to recognize new words based on the word parts you already know.
Recognizing the suffixes that mark different parts of speech will improve your grammar. They can help you gain confidence in expressing yourself in English.
You will learn how add to or change the meaning of roots. Then you’ll practice recognizing those changes in meaning.
You will study and work with several common until they are quite familiar. You may also be surprised how many roots you already recognize because you know several words made from them!
Some of the lessons will seem quite simple, especially if you have been reading in English for a while (or if you speak French, Spanish, Italian, or Portuguese, which use many of the same roots and prefixes.)
However, the lessons build on each other, and I wanted to make it easy even if you do not have much experience with English prefixes or suffixes.
Each lesson should take you from 15 minutes to half an hour. (You might need extra time for the bonus in lesson 5, but probably not much.)
So you can easily finish all the lessons in a week or so. Then you’ll have a big head start on recognizing new words in English, since so many are built with roots and affixes.
Short, varied exercises (and a quiz at the end of each lesson) let you practice each new point.
You’ll get extensive practice with multiple important suffixes, 14 prefixes, and 14 roots. There are also hints and thought exercises with 25 more roots.
Each lesson builds on the material from earlier lessons, from an easy start to broader application of what you’ve learned by the end of the lessons.

Root, Prefix, & Suffix
Worksheets for Classrooms
English root, prefix, and suffix worksheets can help students learn these
important word comprehension clues. These word parts will help them decode words and speed up their vocabulary acquisition. Practicing with the most common suffixes that mark different parts of speech can also increase students’ writing fluency.
Knowing even ten each of the most useful prefixes and suffixes, as well as a slightly larger number of common roots, opens the door to a basic recognition of hundreds of new words. (Check out the words beginning with co-, re-, or un- in any English dictionary!)
- Suggestions for Using Root & Affix (= Prefix and Suffix) Worksheets
- Suffix Worksheets (2 packets)
- Prefixes (a worksheet packet)
- Using Roots to Teach Vocabulary
- Root & Affix Bundle (best value)
Most of the worksheets in EnglishHints.com are for high beginners to intermediate or even advanced students.
There are many places to find affix worksheets for the lower elementary grades. (These would be for words like thankful, quickly, higher and highest, remake, preview, and unknown— very common affixes added to basic English words.)
The prefix and suffix worksheets on EnglishHints emphasize common academic vocabulary rather than the most basic words. They start with easy words demonstrating the most common suffixes or prefixes. they go on to words fairly easy to guess from the affixes and a few common root meanings.
In the Roots packet there is also practice with cognates that might help Spanish-speakers (or speakers of any Latin-based language) recognize academic vocabulary more easily.
You should be able to use these worksheet packets at every level in which students have basic English conversational skills. They will include some words students already know, for review, and many new combinations, with lots of examples and practice in using them.
An overview of word formation in English (using already known words) is especially useful to students who need to read extensively in English or are preparing for a major test.
It will improve students’ writing as well as their reading comprehension if they clearly understand the differences in use between act, action, and active, activate and activation, or simplify and simplification (examples in the Basic Suffix Worksheet Packet).
Root and Affix Packets & Bundles
EnglishHints offers two suffix packets:
There is also a Prefix Packet (the basics for all levels), a Roots packet, and a root and affix bundle including Word-Building Suffixes and the complete prefix and root packets.
The description of each worksheet packet below also includes links to similar pages on this site , so you can get an idea if they might be useful in your class. (However, I have modified many exercises in the packets to make them more useful in a classroom setting.)
You can buy any of our worksheets with a credit card or through Paypal through a secure purchase process run by FastSpring. All the worksheets are covered by our guarantee: If you’re not completely satisfied, let me know the problem and I will fix it if I can, or refund your money— your option. All contacts are also covered by our Privacy Policy.
I
would recommend introducing suffixes before doing too much work with roots or
prefixes, because with one or two short suffix lessons students will be better
prepared to understand and use the words they’ll learn as they study word roots.
The various forms of words made with different prefixes and roots
(reflect, reflection, reflexive, etc.) won’t be so confusing if students
understand suffixes.
You
will need Adobe or another pdf reader to download these pdfs. If you do not have
Adobe Reader you can download it, free, here.

· A comprehensive alphabetical two-page List of Common Suffixes, including part of speech, examples, and a right column for students to complete with another example, either with partners, as a class, or independently. · A 2-page table for teachers with more examples for each suffix to use for games or in teaching (and to review the right column above with the class.)
·
A
list of the 8 most common Noun-building suffixes with a practice table with
examples and boxes to complete showing their relations to the verbs,
adjectives, or other nouns they were made from
·
5

·

Adverb-building suffix (on above page)
·
An
answer sheet for those lists and practice exercises
·
A
3-page Word Building Practice worksheet made from the best of Word Family
Practice and Word Formation Examples & Exercises. (I chose these particular word
families because my Spanish-speaking students needed extra practice with them.
Several are false cognates, like attend and assist. (The common Spanish
meanings are the reverse of the most common English uses.) I believe the
worksheet practice is better organized and simpler than the practice on the webpages,
though— even though that is an improvement over the worksheets I originally
made for my class!
·
Its
answer sheets (2 pages)
·
A
new, brief suffix quiz (considerably easier than the practices, and reduced to
1 page.)
·
Suffixes
for Plurals and Tenses and Suffixes for Comparison— optional extra page
explaining those basic suffix types. Use if your students need it, or adapt its
ideas to your own review.
These

plus Word Families and Suffix List by Use, with additional
practice. You can get an idea of what they are like by checking there.
You might
introduce suffixes with the Word Families and Parts of Speech pages and a
brainstorming activity. (Find out how much your students already know about suffixes— they might be surprised!)
Going over the alphabetical suffix list is a chance to highlight the various uses of suffixes and the relations between them. Completing the boxes on the right side of the list is another chance for students to think of one or two words for each type of suffix they may already know. It’s a good partner or group activity, especially if you have a multi-level class where some students have a lot less English vocabulary than others.
The
noun-building (and to a lesser extent the verb and adjective practices)
reinforce the word family relations between different suffixes (-ify> -ification, etc.)

Using Word Roots to Teach Vocabulary
Help intermediate ESL students master academic vocabulary by learning some of the most useful root and prefix combinations.
It includes examples and practice with over 30 important Latin and Greek roots, including 3 pages on Greek roots, 2 on sensory roots (aud, vid, spect, etc.) and 1-2 pages each on words made from cedere (access, exceed, preceding, procedure, successive, etc.), and 2 other especially high-value roots, pointing out Spanish cognates (as well as warning about false cognates like sensible, which means sensitive in Spanish.)
The packet includes suggestions for teaching roots and practicing them with several games, including ‘memory’ (or ‘Concentration’)— with 4 sets of memory cards to practice 24 words and meanings from the roots in the packet.
Other practice activities include gap-fills, multiple choice, and matching exercises, starting with root and prefix combinations with easy-to-guess meanings based on the root meaning, and going on to important academic words not as easy to guess from the root— with the needed explanations and examples given in the introduction before each practice.
Teaching all the roots in this packet would take about 20 minutes to half an hour for 8-10 days, plus 15 minutes occasionally for review games. The Greek root examples and practice might take 45 minutes. Most of the rest of the worksheets will take 15 minutes to half an hour (or a little longer if you want to brainstorm with the class first).
Most of the games need about 15 minutes, and the memory games can be played by early finishers (1-4 students per set of cards) without help once they’ve been introduced.
29 pages including answer keys for each exercise.

The -s and -‘s suffixes only add the ess sound to the end of a word; they are not even full syllables. Prefixes and suffixes both aid in vocabulary growth and writing proficiency, but only suffixes are employed for grammatical operations like verb conjugation and noun pluralization.
