Can You Root An Android Without A Computer?
You can root an Android without a computer by using root apps like Framaroot, iRoot, KingRoot, One Click Root, KingoRoot, and others. These are all one-click root applications that allow quick and smooth rooting.
Does KingRoot Really Work?
KingRoot really works by rooting your device within a few minutes. However, if unsure, you can try a root checker app to ensure your phone has root access.
Is It Safe To Root Your Phone?
It is not safe to root your phone. Rooting can void the manufacturer’s warranty. It can also lead to security loopholes that hackers can exploit to hack your device.
Step 1
Power off your Galaxy S3. Then hold down Volume Down, Center Home, and Power buttons together until you see the warning screen.
Step 2
Hit Volume Up button to enter Download ODIN mode and connect a microUSB cable from your Galaxy S3 to your computer.
Step 3
Next, download GalaxyS3RootNew.zip, unzip the files and run odin3v1.85.exe by double-clicking on the file.
Step 4
When ODIN program opens, you should find a highlighted yellow box with a random COM number. If you don’t see this, download and install Samsung USB drivers
Step 5
DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING ELSE, hit “PDA” button and select the file CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4.tar.
Step 6
Hit “Start” button. This will install ClockworkMod Recovery on your Galaxy S3 i9300. If you get stuck on this step, just try a different USB port.
Step 7
Once ODIN is done flashing, you will see “PASS!” in green highlighted box.

simplified steps to login as root / set root password.
Step 1 -Set root password
sudo passwd root
Step 2 — allow root login
just go to /etc/ssh/sshd_config change the line as below
PermitRootLogin yes #(i just added this to the bottom of the file)
What about security! This is a hobby learning pi, not a secure pi, only login as root as needed not to upset system files.
I want to edit text pi files on winscp from a PC; sometimes that means root access needed to edit — darkice.cfg for example. It’s a long file, easier to copy-paste from backups or otherwise.

I want to edit text pi files on winscp from a PC

I agree since I hate having to type in terminal. If the path is really long it gets to be a pain proof reading. Click and edit is much easier and you can easily keep the file in Notepad++ while you test it.
I hate looking like a TV show Linux nerd touch typing a path at 80 WPM to edit a 2 line file when I could just click the mouse on a file.
I don’t use my Pi for any financial transactions and I am ready to admit that it was my action that borked the OS, that’s why we have backups.
If you are really skeered you can always disable the root when you are done.
And I was happy this thread was here near the top of the pile today when I needed a refresher on a new SD card. Everytime I do something in Linux seems like I have to GoOgle for help. I never can remember the right options for any command, if I remember the command.

If you are on the command-line, try using the TAB key more often. Bash has auto-completion.

Open the terminal. Ubuntu and several other distributers lock the root account automatically to prevent you from using commands that can damage your system. You can unlock the root account in the terminal. If you’re in the desktop environment, you can press ‘Ctrl + Alt + T to start the terminal.
-
-
-
- sudo passwd -dl root
-
Open the terminal. If the terminal is not already open, open it. Many distributions allow you to open it by pressing Ctrl + Alt + T.
-
-
Enter the root password when prompted. After typing «su -» and pressing Enter. You’ll be prompted for the root password.
-
-
Enter the commands that require root access. Once you’ve used su - to log in as root, you can run any commands that require root access. The su command is preserved until the end of the session, so you don’t need to keep re-entering the root password every time you need to run a command.
-
- Type sudo command and press (e.g. sudo ifconfig). When prompted for the password, enter your user password, not the root password.
- sudo is the preferred method for distributions like Ubuntu, where it will work even when the root account is locked.
- This command is limited to users with administrator privileges. Users can be added or removed from /etc/sudoers.
-
Open the terminal. Ubuntu and several other distributers lock the root account automatically to prevent you from using commands that can damage your system. You can unlock the root account in the terminal. If you’re in the desktop environment, you can press ‘Ctrl + Alt + T to start the terminal.

-
Add AllowRoot=True to the file. Go to the bottom of the file. Add «AllowRoot=True» below «TimedLoginDelay = 10.» Add a few spaces so that the «A» in «AllowRoot» goes right below the «T» in «TimedLoginDelay».

Type sudo nano /etc/pam.d/gdm-password and press . This is the command to edit the password authentication manager file.

Consider using other methods for gaining temporary root access. Logging in as root is not recommended for regular use, as it is very easy to perform commands that will render your system inoperable, and it also poses a security risk, especially if you are running an SSH server on your machine. Only log in as root when performing emergency repairs, such as dealing with disk failures or restoring locked accounts.
- Using sudo or su instead of logging in as root will help prevent unintended damage while logged in as root. Using these commands gives the user a chance to think about the command before severe damage is done.
- Some distributions, such as Ubuntu, leave the root account locked until you manually unlock it. Not only does this prevent users from unknowingly doing too much damage using the root account. It also secures the system from potential hackers, as the root account is typically targeted first. With a locked root account, hackers aren’t able to gain access to it. You will need to unlock the root account and allow root login before logging in to the root account.
-
- If «root» is not listed as one of the log in accounts, click Not listed? and type «root» as the username.
- If you need root access to perform a command, use the method in the previous section.
-
- In many cases, the root password may be «password.»
- If you don’t know the root password, or have forgotten it, see the next section for instructions on resetting it.
- In Ubuntu, the root account is locked and cannot be used until it has been unlocked.
-
Avoid running complex programs while logged in as root. There’s a chance that the program you intend to run will have a negative effect on your system when it has root access. It’s highly recommended that you use sudo or su to run programs instead of logging in as root.
-
-
Reboot your computer and hold left- after the BIOS screen. This will open the GRUB menu.
- The timing on this can be tricky, so you may have to try multiple times.
-
Select the first (recovery mode) entry on the list. This will load recovery mode for your current distribution.
-
Select the root option from the menu that appears. This will start the terminal with you logged in as the root account.
-
- mount -rw -o remount /
-
Create a new password for any accounts you’re locked out of. Once you’re logged in as root and have changed the access permissions, you can create a new password for any account:
- Type passwd accountName and press . If you need to change the root password, type passwd root.
- Enter the new password twice when prompted.

What Is Rooting?
As per the definition by Geeks for Geeks, a computer science portal, rooting refers to gaining root access to your phone. It enables you to access the operating system’s core files and functions normally restricted for security reasons. This means you can modify the system’s settings. You can also remove pre-installed applications or add custom firmware or ROMs. Put simply, it gives you extensive customization options.
You can watch this YouTube video by Android Authority to understand rooting better.

Make The Right Decision
Now you know the best ways to root Android without PC. You can use Framaroot, iRoot, KingRoot, One Click Root, KingoRoot, or Dr. Fone Root for rooting. While all the apps are excellent and have a one-click rooting process, it is advised to consider what’s best for you.
But if you are ok with using a PC, you can choose a comprehensive app like Dr. Fone Root. It will allow you to create a system backup, recover lost files, etc., before you begin rooting.
What Is Rooting a Phone?
What Benefits You after Rooting Your Android Device?
Rooting can overcome the limitations that carriers and hardware manufacturers put on Android devices.
Take Android data recovery as an example. If you want to rescue your lost or deleted Android data from the Android device directly, you can use third-party Android data recovery software to do the job. But, such a kind of software can only scan and detect files from a rooted Android device. That is, you need to root the Android device before recovery.
Additionally, Android rooting can also facilitate the complete removal and replacement of the operating system on the device, usually with a more recent release of the current operating system.
Reboot Required
- Reboot.
- Enter boot-time password, if any.
- Enter your boot loader’s menu.
- If single user mode is available, select that (Debian calls it ‘Recovery mode’).
- If not, and you run GRUB:
- Highlight your normal boot option.
- Press e to enter edit mode. You may be asked for a GRUB password there.
- Highlight the line starting with
kernel
orlinux
. - Press e.
- Add the word ‘single’ at the end. (don’t forget to prepend a space!)
- Press Enter and boot the edited stanza. Some GRUBs use Ctrl—X, some use b. It says which one it is at the bottom of the screen.
mount / -o remount,rw
passwd # Enter your new password twice at the prompts
mount / -o remount,ro
sync # some people sync multiple times. Do what pleases you.
reboot
and reboot
, or, if you know your normal runlevel, say telinit 2
(or whatever it is).
- Mount the root volume.
- Get
passwd
running. - Change your password with the
passwd
command.
Rescue Disk: this one’s easy. Boot a rescue disk of your choice. Mount your root filesystem. The process depends on how your volumes are layered, but eventually boils down to:
# do some stuff to make your root volume available.
# The rescue disk may, or may not do it automatically.
mkdir /tmp/my-root
mount /dev/$SOME_ROOT_DEV /tmp/my-root
$EDITOR /tmp/my-root/etc/shadow
# Follow the `/etc/shadow` editing instructions near the top
cd /
umount /tmp/my-root
reboot
Enable USB Debugging on Your Android Device
The detailed operations to enable USB debugging are not the same in different Android versions. You need to choose a suitable guide based on your currently used Android version.
If you are using Android 2.3 or the earlier versions:
Go to Settings > Application > Development > USB debugging.

If you are using Android 3.0 — 4.1 versions:
Go to Settings > Developer options > USB debugging.

If you are using Android 4.2 — 5.2 versions:
Go to Settings > About phone > Build number (click several times until you see “you are under develop mode”) > Settings > Developer options > USB debugging.

If you are using Android 6.0 and later versions:
Go to Settings > About phone > Software info > Build number (click several times until you see “you are under develop mode”) > Settings > Developer options > USB debugging.

Now, the USB debugging on your Android device has been enabled. Next, you can select a suitable Android root application to root your Android device.
Click to Tweet
After enabling the USB debugging, you need to use Android root software to root your Android device and you’d better select a reliable and dedicated one because unprofessional software may brick your Android device.
Before Selecting
Here are some words we want to tell you in advance to help you choose the appropriate tool based on your actual situation.
Normally, there are both PC and APK versions of Android root tools for you to choose. To use the PC version or to use the APK version, it depends.
- Android root PC version enables you to root your Android device with computer, while root Android APK version allows you to root Android without computer.
- It seems that the Android root APK version is more convenient because it doesn’t require you to have a computer and a USB cable at hand. You can root your Android device anytime and anywhere.
- However, in certain situations, Android root tool PC version is a better choice. For instance, when you want to rescue your lost and deleted files from the Android device directly, you need to root your Android device beforehand. If you install an APK version on your Android device, the installation files may overwrite the lost files and make them unrecoverable. Thus, a PC version is better.

We have mentioned twice about this topic in this article: recovering data from the Android device directly. If you are interested in this topic, you can read this part to get some useful information about Android data recovery.
MiniTool has free Android data recovery software that can help you retrieve your lost and delete Android data from the device and the Android SD card. It is MiniTool Mobile Recovery for Android.

This software has two recovery modules: Recover from Phone and Recover from SD-Card:
- With the first module, you can directly restore your data from your Android phone and tablet. As we have mentioned above, you need to first root your Android device with a PC version of Android root software and then you can use Recover from Phone to get your lost data back from the Android device.
- The second recovery module is specially designed to retrieve data from your Android SD card. You can remove the SD card from your Android device, insert the card to a card reader, connect it to your computer and use this module to start data recovery.
Why Root Your Phone?
There are many reasons why you will want to root Android phone. For me, it was mostly because it allowed me to install spyware on my phone to track my 12-year-old nephew without his knowing. However, another benefit of rooting that attracted me was that it gave me root access. This allowed me to gain more customization. For instance, I can remove bloatware or install custom ROMs with a rooted Android smartphone.
Here are some common reasons you would want to root your mobile.
- Enabling root access: Allows customizing various aspects of Android phones, including themes, fonts, and icons.
- Removing bloatware: You can remove the system applications and increase the space on your phone.
- Installing custom ROMs: Rooting opens the door to installing custom ROMs for additional features, improved performance, and the ability to run the latest Android versions.
- Running root-only apps: Some software applications like mSpy require rooting access to spy on someone, like tracking WhatsApp messages, calls, conversations, etc.
Without Rebooting
With sudo: if you have sudo
permissions to run passwd
, you can do:
sudo passwd root
Enter your password, then enter a new password for root twice. Done.
These are the easy ones.
Other Ways
Obviously, there are countless variations to the above. They all boil down to two steps:
- Get root access to the computer (catch-22 — and the real trick)
- Change root’s password somehow.

I’ve never styled my hair before or even attempted to style my hair besides a simple braid or throwing it up in a clip. After I got my hair cut this past week my hairdresser gave me really a really beautiful 90’s blowout, and I wanted to copy that whenever I felt like it! The end product makes me feel really confident about my minimal abilities. I watched a video on YouTube on how to do blowouts, and I managed to make my hair look really nice.
My only complaint is that I wish the cord would actually detach from the brush, it would make it so much easier to store since it’s quite large. Otherwise, great!

I purchased this to put in my travel bag. For years I’ve used a round brush dryer that I love. And it is no longer available to purchase. So I’ve purchased several others to try and haven’t cared for any of them. But I travel frequently and wanted to have one to keep permanently in my travel bag so looked around, read reviews and decided to give this a try. I have very fine, thin, slightly wavy hair. And at home I blow dry to get most of the moisture out then switch to my old round dryer but still struggle to make the wavy smooth.
While recently on vacation I used my new dryer for the first time. I didn’t blow dry first. This thing is powerful! I dried my hair completely in very little time, and my hair was smooth and full. It’s design is simple to use and the end doesn’t get hot so I’m able to hold both sides without getting burned. The brush dryer does get quite hot so be careful if your head is sunburned from the beach. Lol. I like this so much I think I’m going to purchase another one of these for home use. Summary: great drying power, easy to use, highly recommended.

I have long straight hair that needs some styling in order to have any body. I used to set my hair in Velcro rollers every morning. Now I just use this round brush dryer and I’m good to go in 10 minutes. I liked this model because the barrel is only 1 1/2 inches in diameter, perfect for my shoulder length, thinner hair. I also prefer this model because it doesn’t have a rotating barrel.

Drawbacks Of Rooting Your Android Phone
- It will increase your security risks.
- The manufacturer warranty will become void.
- Your Android device may become unusable if something goes wrong.
- Over-the-Air (OTA) updates provided by the manufacturer may no longer be available for rooted devices.
- Your phone may become incompatible with some applications.
Now that you know about rooting and its benefits and drawbacks, it’s time to learn about the different rooting apps that can help root Android smartphones.
However, compatibility will depend on your phone’s firmware version. After updating your phone, the security holes Framaroot uses to root and unroot your phone can be patched. Hence, rooting your phone might be impossible if your device’s firmware is fully updated.
This happened to me once. I upgraded my Android OS from KitKat 4.4 to Oreo 8.1. But because of this upgrade, the Framaroot app could not root my device. So I had to use SDK Platform Tools to downgrade my phone to KitKat 4.4 to continue with rooting.
I recommend using this device because it makes rooting very easy. I remember that when I opened the app, I only had to click on 3 buttons to complete the entire process.
It will take you about 5 minutes.
- Download Framaroot here.
The download files are given at the end of the link above.
You can download any version, but it is always best to download the latest. - You can install the application directly from your browser or from File Explorer.
There is a chance that the app will not install because of security reasons.
- If your device’s system warns about the security risk and won’t install the application, follow the steps below:
- Go to settings.
- Tap “Apps & notifications.”
- Click “Advanced.”
- Tap “Special app access.”
- Select “Install unknown apps” or “Allow install from unknown sources.”
- If Google Play Protect is blocking the app from installation, simply click on “Install anyway.”
- Once installed, open the Framaroot root app.
- Select Install SuperSU from the drop-down menu.
- Select any exploit from the available options.
- You will get the confirmation that SuperSu and su binary is installed.
Simply reboot your device, and it will be rooted.
Once your phone is rooted, you can install a spyware app like FlexiSPY or leverage any other benefits of rooting your Android phone.
- Open the Framaroot app.
- Select “Unroot” from the drop-down list.
- Select any exploit, and your phone will be unrooted.
The next application to root Android phone is iRoot. This app lets you root Android without PC in a matter of minutes. When I was using this application to root one of my phones, it took me only around 3 minutes to initiate the root process.
You can download the iRoot app here. Like Framaroot, iRoot is a one-click root app that allows you to root an Android phone with a single click. Moreover, it does not need any pre-settlements like TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) to work.
This app was built by a Chinese company, so you will see a lot of Chinese text, but you can download and use the Google Translate application to convert the text to your preferred language.
iRoot is compatible with any devices running Android OS 2.2 or higher. It is also available for use with a PC. If you root the app with a PC, you must enable USB debugging. Another requirement for rooting your Android device using the iRoot app is that your phone’s battery should be at least 50% charged. Although it won’t drain 50% of your battery, it is best to charge your phone to avoid any problems.
- Tap on the downloaded file to install it.
- Grant all the permissions you want to give to the root app.
- The application’s homepage will show your Android device name and a message that says “No Root permission.”
- Tap on the “Get Root access” button.
When you click on Get Root access, the app will check all your phone’s information and try to find an exploit on its cloud servers.
- Once it finds an exploit, it will start rooting your Android device.
If the root is successful, it will show a confirmation message. If it is unsuccessful, you will also see a message that lets you know.
The KingRoot app is one of the most popular root applications to root Android without PC. You can head over to this link to download the app. One of the best things about this application is that it is cloud-based, allowing for seamless rooting from anywhere worldwide.
In fact, I remember finding this application when I was looking for a one-click root app that is accessible anywhere. I was on vacation in London with my family, including my cousin, who is just nine years old. I wanted to install KidsGuard Pro, a spyware app, on his phone, so his parents and I could monitor where he is all the time during the holiday. This required me to root his Android phone.
I was looking for an application that would let me root Android instantly, and that’s when I read about KingRoot. In fact, I landed on one of KingRoot’s articles while searching for the benefits associated with rooting. From there, I learned about the app and used it to root the Android device. The company’s large resource base is another reason why you should go with KingRoot.
Once downloaded from the above link, you can root your smartphone using the steps below:
- Install and launch the application.
- Give the required access to the phone.
- Read the license agreements and agree to them.
- KingRoot will analyze your phone for security issues.
- Tap on the three horizontal lines on the top-left corner of the screen.
This will take you to the rooting screen, showing your phone is not rooted.
- All you need to do is tap the “Try Root” option.
- KingRoot will start the root process, and the percentage of the completed process will appear on the screen.
It is normal for your phone to reboot when using KingRoot.
Once the process is complete, you can use a root-checker app to confirm that you now have system permission.
One Click Root
I specifically use it to remove bloatware, as it allows me to root my phone, get rid of the bloatware, and then unroot it. This means I don’t have to keep my phone rooted to get the extra memory space taken up by bloatware.
This allows me to uninstall all unrequired system applications and then get my phone back to the unrooted version.
You can download One Click Root by clicking on this link. But before downloading the application, take a look at its compatible phone list to ensure it will work for you.
Here are the steps to root Android without PC once you have downloaded the app.
- Open the app and tap on the “Root Device” button.
- Tap the “Scan Now” button.
After clicking this button, the app will search for an exploit on its servers. Once it finds an exploit, it will start the rooting process.
You can also download the One Click Root Checker app from the Google Play Store to check if your phone is safely rootable. If it is, you can connect with One Click Root’s technician to begin the rooting process.
KingoRoot is a universal one-click rooting app for your Android phone. You can download the KingoRoot apk by clicking on this link. If the app is not installed for security reasons, you can enable the download from unknown sources option from settings, as you did for Framaroot.
After installing the application, here’s what you need to do:
- Open the app.
The screen will show your phone’s model and Android version.
- Tap “One Click Root” to begin the process.
- The results screen will appear showing how much rooting is completed, and you will get a confirmation of whether the root was successful.

How To Root An Android Phone Using A PC & Dr. Fone Root
While you can root Android without PC, there are many reasons to use one. For one, it offers enhanced capabilities. This is because PC-based rooting tools usually offer a wider range of features, customization options, and compatibility with different device models and operating system versions.
Another reason is that using a PC gives you better recovery options. For instance, you can install custom recoveries like TWRP to create full system backups, install custom ROMs (alternative operating systems), and perform other advanced operations on your device.
I usually prefer using a PC whenever I have access to one because it’s actually safer. The app I use for rooting my Android phone is Dr. Fone Root.
The process for rooting with Dr. Fone Root is as simple as every other app mentioned in this article. However, the benefit here is that it lets you back up your mobile data onto a PC before you root Android phone.
You can head to this website to download the Dr. Fone Root app on your Android device. Once you have downloaded the file, install and launch it.
- Connect your device to your computer via a USB and enable USB debugging to back up your data.
- Click on the fast root or safe root option to begin rooting.
