You may have heard of the term “rooting your phone” and you may have seen that some apps on the Google Play Store require “root” access to work. But what is root? What is “rooting” your phone and why would you do it? Let’s find out!

So “gaining root access” is actually forcing the system to give you more permissions and access, but the process also opens many ways to screw up your device. This is why the rooting process always comes with warnings and caveats that you should know what you’re doing before attempting it.

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority
One of the best things about Android is its customization and flexibility. Android lets you use it the way you want to, whether that means changing the launcher, or setting up a host of unique automatic functions with Tasker. But for some, that isn’t enough. You can gain near-total control of the OS if you root Android.
This isn’t as common as it once was, but there are still benefits to rooting Android. If you like the sounds of that, but find yourself feeling a little anxious about “hacking” your much-loved (and probably expensive) device, then read on to learn everything you need to know about rooting Android. It’s actually easier than you might think.
Editor’s note: Rooting Android devices requires a high level of tinkering and modifying your phone’s software. This can be risky, and there is a chance you’ll damage your handset. This is terrible news considering rooting Android may void your warranty. Always do your research and be confident about the steps you’re taking, as no one but you will be responsible should anything happen to your device.
Note: Rooting, in this context, has nothing to do with the term root folder in reference to the location of something in the folder hierarchy.

Before Rooting the Phone

Note: Your Device needs to be rooted to fulfill this request otherwise Android will automatically reject the request.
Effects on System OS After Rooting
If you’re completely new to Android, you’re in for a treat with all of the software tweaks and customization options that your smartphone or tablet offers out of the box. But if you really want to take things to the next level, the ability to mod your device expands exponentially when you’re rooted.
There are a lot of misconceptions about rooting, and many of these stem from a general lack of knowledge about the subject. So to help clear things up a bit, I’ll go over the basic concept of root, as well as all of the benefits and drawbacks of rooting an Android device.
What Is Root?
In the most basic sense, «root» refers to the topmost folder in a device’s file system. If you’re familiar with Windows Explorer, root by this definition would be similar to the C: drive, which can be accessed by going up several levels in the folder tree from the My Documents folder, for instance. In Mac OS X and Linux, it would be a / (slash) instead of a C: directory.

But if you want to make system-level tweaks to your phone’s software, you’ll need to be able to modify the operating system files on the root side of this virtual barrier. Being able to fully access and modify these files is known as having «root access» or being «rooted.»
What Can I Do if I’m Rooted?
If we consider that root is the topmost folder in a device’s file system where all of the files that make up the Android operating system are stored, and rooting allows you to access this folder, then being rooted means that you can change just about any aspect of your device’s software.

Deleting bloatware apps from the /system/apps/ folder in the root directory.
As another example, the vast majority of your phone’s main interface is controlled by a single app called SystemUI, which is stored in the root directory. If you know how to program an Android app, you could modify SystemUI to completely change the look and feel of your device. But even if you don’t, there are thousands of Android developers who do, so you could simply use root access to replace this file with a pre-modified version.

Aside from manually deleting, modifying, and replacing system files, there are thousands upon thousands of apps that use root access to help you modify your device’s software at the press of a button.

What Are the Drawbacks of Rooting?
As awesome as rooting is, there are definitely a few drawbacks involved. The biggest downside is that most devices will no longer be able to accept an over-the-air firmware update if they’re rooted, which means you’ll have to manually apply any future updates using Fastboot, Odin, or Smart Switch.

How Do I Root My Device?
Now that you have a good understanding of root as well as the benefits and drawbacks involved, you’ll probably want to know exactly how to go about rooting your device. As I mentioned earlier, there are different methods for different Android devices, but one of the easiest and widely available methods is CF Auto Root.
Chances are, your device is supported by CF Auto Root. But if not, we’ve covered many of the various alternative root methods for quite a few devices, which you can check out at the link below.

Other worthwhile deals to check out:
Without a comprehensive root method for all Android phones and tablets, a device-specific approach is needed. And since we always cover new rooting methods for all the popular phones here at Gadget Hacks, we’ve built this always-updated guide to rooting many mainstream Android devices.
You may click on the links above to go directly to the full rooting guides for those particular devices, or just scroll down below to find your Android device (in alphabetical order) and you’ll be rooted in no time.
In the simplest terms, «root» is the topmost folder on your Android device. If you have experience using Windows Explorer, you can think of root as the C: drive, where all of your other folders like My Documents, Program Files and your Windows files are stored.

There are a few drawbacks to rooting your device, most notably that your device will most likely no longer receive over-the-air firmware updates (in most cases). Secondly, rooting voids the warranty on most devices, so you’ll probably be out of luck on that end if something happens to your phone after rooting it. Lastly, there are potential security risks involved, since rooting your device will also grant apps access to your top-level folders. However, you should be able to mitigate these concerns by installing a root manager like SuperSU or Magisk.
Devices That Can’t Be Rooted
- Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (US variants)
- Samsung Galaxy Note 9 (US variants)
The above list only contains the most common devices at the time of this writing. As we learn about more phones that can’t be rooted, we will continue to add to the list.
Essential Phone
The Essential phone, for all its early faults, has had some incredible software support. One reason for the timely updates is its stock Android UI, which includes standard utilities like Fastboot to incidentally make rooting a lot easier. You just unlock your bootloader, flash TWRP with Fastboot, then use TWRP to flash a root ZIP like Magisk — dead simple.

Google Nexus 6P

Google Nexus 7 (2012 or 2013)
Every Nexus owner should have the Nexus Root Toolkit installed on their Windows PC. This powerful tool has the ability to root any Nexus device, but is capable of much more. With functions ranging from creating a backup to installing a custom recovery, NRT is a great companion program for your Nexus 7.

Google Pixel or Pixel XL
When Google switched from the partner-developed Nexus line to their own in-house manufactured Pixels, they changed a few things under the hood. Most notably, the new A/B partition layout for seamless updates — this meant the recovery and boot partitions were now merged, which had significant implications for the rooting process. Thankfully, Android’s development community sorted these issues rather quickly and came up with a Fastboot-based root method that’s actually pretty easy, all things considered.

Google Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL
Google’s newer Pixel phones were rooted in far less time than their first, as the community had already sorted out issues with the new A/B partitions. This means you just boot off a TWRP image, flash a ZIP to make TWRP permanent, then you can flash the Magisk ZIP to get systemless root.

OnePlus 3 or 3T
OnePlus has the most root-friendly devices on the market. While they’re similar in many regards to Google’s Pixel lineup, they don’t have the bleeding-edge under-the-hood features that create hurdles with rooting. As a result, 2016’s OnePlus 3 and 3T are some of the easiest devices to root, period.

OnePlus 5
The OnePlus 5 came in first place on our first list of the best phones for rooting, and for good reason. All you have to do is unlock the bootloader with a Fastboot command, then flash a TWRP image file. After that, you can just boot into TWRP to flash a root ZIP to wrap things up.

OnePlus 6
2018’s OnePlus 6 carries on the tradition of easily rootable OnePlus phones. You can even enable an advanced reboot dialog to get straight into recovery or bootloader mode without using ADB commands, so it’s just a matter of unlocking the bootloader, flashing a custom recovery image, then flashing a root ZIP like Magisk.

Other Android Devices
Due to the vast number of Android devices on the market and the differences between these devices, there isn’t a rooting method that will universally work on all devices. However, there are two methods that will work for a wide variety of phones.

The next catchall method is for older devices. CF Auto Root, created by developer Chainfire, works on hundreds of devices, but has since been deprecated. Therefore, it will only work if your device hasn’t received a firmware update since January 2017. You will need to use a computer with CF Auto Root, so make sure you have access to one before you begin.
CF Auto Root works by unlocking your device’s bootloader, so bare in mind that if you use a device with a locked bootloader, you’ll lose all of your stored data by using this method, so make sure to back up your files before you begin. But if you’re ready, head over to our full CF Auto Root guide below.

Why root?

So the bottom line is actually personalization and software flexibility. After market developers talk about “getting the most out of your Android device,” and rooting is actually one of the ways to get your device to do tasks and things that are not usually possible when running on the software that came out of the box with your device.
Moving & Removing Apps
Access to /system also means you can move apps or updates to system apps from /data to /system (with caution!), if the partition has enough space.
Note that moving apps to the sdcard has risks and cons, and should be undertaken only if space is needed. Most modern devices have enough memory for many apps (16GB+), providing that photos/videos/music are stored on an external sdcard.
Usual “root only” features and apps
Once you gain root access, you can now install apps that would otherwise be unusable on a non-rooted Android device. It’s up to you to install these, but the apps usually focus on giving you more features and more flexibility in using your device.

In devices where internal storage is a premium, you can install an app like “Link2SD” to do exactly what the app says it does – move app data files to your expansion SD card. This will not be possible without elevated root privileges, so now you can free up more space on your internal storage and install more apps if you want.

“Tasker” is a popular automation app for Android devices, and it only works with root access. Automation will speed up some daily processes for you – such as automatically connect to a wifi network, set alarms and profiles when you arrive at home (or at a specific location), connect to Bluetooth connections when in a certain vehicle, and other cool automation processes.
“Xposed Framework” is probably the king of all tweaks – it is a framework that allows you to install modules for specific Android tweaks like battery saving features, call and text blacklisting, floating windows and other such fancy features not normally found on stock software. And yes, you guessed it right – it only works with root access.
Root File Explorers
You can remount your /system/ directory read-write, which will allow you to remove carrier-shipped applications you don’t like and so on. Root file explorers can allow you to view all folders on your phone, such as /data/ which is normally protected.
To root or not to root?

The next question is whether you should root Android or leave it as it is. That, of course, is a matter of personal preference, but there are some compelling arguments both for and against it.
On the plus side, it gives you more access to several cool apps and customization options. It also lets you upgrade older phones to newer Android versions long after your manufacturer and carrier have stopped supporting it. As mentioned, rooting Android will let you change things that you otherwise couldn’t, and it will also allow you to use a host of cool apps.
Android root apps and options
Here are just a few things you can do with a rooted Android device:
For some people, rooting Android is also something of a statement. You paid for this device, so why shouldn’t you use it exactly as you wish? Especially if it means removing cynical and unhelpful bloatware. There’s also a certain status that comes from it, and a great sense of accomplishment when you achieve root access for the first time.
If you’re a developer hoping to create your own root apps, you need to start somewhere!
Will you damage your device?
![]()
Robert Triggs / Android Authority
That said, there are also some potential downsides to rooting.
Even once you know how to root Android, some risks are involved. Get this wrong, and there is a chance of bricking your device (it’s happened to me). It’s easier and safer on some devices than others, but if you’re not overly confident with your tech wizardry, you may prefer to leave your phone be.
Warranties and legalities — is rooting legal?
This leads us nicely onto warranties, which is another grey area in the world of rooting. While carriers don’t like you tampering with their hardware and software, some manufacturers have become kinder to rooters and even those who install third-party software. However, few have a clear stance on what software tweaks will void your warranty, and you certainly can’t count on having your rooted handset fixed if something goes wrong. Devices with locked bootloaders, the very low-level software that starts up your phone, are explicitly designed to prevent rooting, so don’t expect sympathy from these companies.
In the US, rooting is perfectly legal.
Thanks to clues like Knox on Samsung, manufacturers and sellers can often identify root, even after you unroot. Note that there are ways to hide evidence of having rooted your device, but these won’t always work. There’s a kind of arms race between hackers and manufacturers, and your chances of unrooting and covering your tracks will often come down to who is winning at the time! This is why many people only root older phones already out of warranty.
Security

It’s also worth noting that some apps and features will stop working once you root. For example, banking apps will often stop working due to the perceived security risk. Even Snapchat and Pokemon Go take issue with root! There are also often countermeasures to these limitations — though your mileage may vary. You can probably tell by now that rooting typically means creating more work for yourself, but it can be enjoyable work!
Of course, if you aren’t automatically receiving the usual updates, it also falls on you to ensure you get all the latest security patches. In theory, you could improve your privacy with the proper root apps. But it’s on you. It should also be noted that SuperSU developer Chainfire hung up his root apps, so most rooters have now switched over to Magisk.

Backups
There are also many apps that claim to make a full nandroid backup.
What is the SuperUser app?

In most cases, modern rooting processes actually make this true, although technically, they are two different processes. For instance, flashing Chainfire’s SuperSU app actually lets you gain root access once the flashing process is done, no need to do any other stuff.
ROMs
Though root is not required for flashing new ROMs, many apps that make it easier do require root.
CyanogenMod is a very popular rom that many people put on their phones. It is also easy to install via the ROM Manager app. First install the Clockwork recovery. Then run a backup before you flash any roms.
Also check out «Where can I find stock or custom ROMs for my device» or the XDA forums for other custom roms. Most devices have a specific «Android Development» sub-forum where ROMs are posted.
Always do a nandroid backup before installing any rom or mod! You may also need to wipe all data and cache from your phone before installing or upgrading a ROM.
One popular set of kernels is those provided by ChevyNo1. You can also download them via the premium version of the ROM Manager. Make a nandroid (ClockworkMod) backup before using these kernels! You’ll also want to get SetCPU to make the most out of these kernels.
Start with the low voltage kernels at the lowest speed and work your way up to the 1.2GHz. If your phone is stable up to the 1.2GHz range, then try some of the ultra low voltage kernels. If you start getting force closes, then switch back to a low voltage kernel.
Basically each phone (of the same phone brand/model) varies by which kernel it can handle due to the manufacturing differences between processors. So I may have a Motorola Droid that can run ultra low voltage kernels and yours may not be able to run them. These phones weren’t necessarily designed to run like this.
On systems which use su you need to know the password for the root account, so basically root access is off limits to those who don’t know the password. With sudo things are a little different and depending on how the system is setup, you need to be an authorized sudoer and/or you need to authenticate with a password. So su and sudo ensure that there is an authentication step needed, so that only those allowed to have root access actually gain it.
Tethering
Some devices already have Wi-Fi tethering out-of-the-box, like the Samsung Galaxy S, so this isn’t such a big deal on them unless the carrier charges for the feature.
Patching Apps
With root access you can patch other apps to gain special access to functions, or removal of self-protection for some apps.
As you have probably guessed root access isn’t available on the majority of retail Android phones. The occasional device from China might come with root access enabled but overall it isn’t something you can expect to find by default. There are several different ways to get root access on your phone, and it really depends on which phone you have. Some phones can be rooted just by replacing the boot loader and then adding some special su files, while others need to use an exploit. A third method is to install a custom ROM like Cyanogenmod, which has root access pre-baked into the software. Which method is best for you really does depend on your device.
I mentioned earlier that all operating systems have bugs, in security circles bugs which could potentially allow for security breaches are called vulnerabilities, and an actual piece of code which uses a vulnerability is called an exploit. For some phones to be rooted a vulnerability needs to be exploited. What basically happens is that due to a bug some code can be crafted to run at an elevated privileged (i.e. root) and using root the relevant su files can be copied onto the phone to grant permanent root access, without having to constantly exploit the vulnerability. These rooting methods often only work for certain firmware versions as whenever Google or Samsung or whoever find out about these vulnerabilities they are patched and the code fixed.

So, should you root Android?

With all that in mind, should you root your Android device?
Ultimately, that comes down to what you intend to use your device for. Do you even need to root Android? If you have a specific use-case scenario in mind and understand the risks and limitations, then there’s nothing to stop you from learning how to root Android and giving yourself that extra freedom.
Seeing as root might also mean you lose functionality, it’s no longer a straight win across the board. It’s fun, powerful, and useful, but it’s not as useful as it once was.
For me, the obvious answer is to only root older devices. Keep your daily driver clean while it’s still getting new updates and patches, but root secondary gadgets that you want to tinker with. That way, you get to have your cake and eat it too.

Now let’s apply that theory to Android. Our favorite mobile OS runs on top of a Linux kernel. That means that there are normal processes and there are root processes. It also means that normal apps can’t go around altering the system files or snoop around in the data of other apps.
It is a benefit as it means that app developers can create apps which perform privileged operations, actions that would normally be prohibited. One of the most popular root apps is Titanium Backup root which allows you to backup your apps including all protected and system apps, something it wouldn’t be able to do without root access.
However, Google has invested a lot of effort in making sure that Android is as secure as possible. Like all operating systems (including iOS) there are bugs which can be exploited (and we will talk more about that in a moment). But the downside of having root access available on your device is that any app can seek to gain root privileges and if it succeeds then it can do anything it wants, including stealing all your private data.
What is rooting?
Rooting is no longer always essential for flashing a custom ROM. However, it is advisable to root Android in some cases to make use of the most exciting features.
Handy rooting terminology
Screenshots & screen recording
root is needed for screenshots before 4.0-Ice Cream Sandwich.
Most pre-lollipop screen recorders also require root.
Is root still relevant today?
With more and more apps popping up at the Play Store for better features, and with manufacturers getting better and better at adding relevant features, it would seem that the need for root access is on the wane. But we think not – at least, not yet.

But the foundations of Android as a platform has ever been built on the concepts of open source and after-market community development. As long as there are curious people out there, and people who think they can make a device do better, rooting will probably still be with us.
How to root Android devices

If you decide to go ahead, you’ll probably wonder how to root Android. Let’s lead you in the right direction!
The bad news is there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution when you root Android phones and tablets. Different brands and even software versions can make the rooting process vary. Even within handset variants, you may find that some techniques work and others don’t.
This is a minimum-fuss method that will work in many cases. However, it’s worth noting that some come with annoying push notifications and ads. I’d advise checking reviews before settling on which one to use. Some would even say that if you can’t figure out how to root your device without one of these apps, perhaps you shouldn’t be doing it at all (because if you encounter problems during the process, you won’t know what to do).
The good news is that in many cases, rooting is much easier than it once was.
If a one-click solution doesn’t appeal to you, things get a little more complex, and you’ll need to look for specific instructions for your device. This might mean using PC software and connecting your phone via USB. It might also mean using a custom recovery, or downloading additional software like Odin for Samsung devices. The best part about these options is that you learn a lot along the way.
Before rooting your device, it’s always good to back up first. Then settle in, read a lot, triple-check the instructions, and dive in. Crossing your fingers and holding your breath would be a good idea because you just took the red pill! The world of Android rooting is exciting, empowering, frustrating, and engaging — you’ll learn tons about how Android works, what your phone can do, and how awesome Android can be when you get in the driver’s seat.
Once you’ve rooted your phone, it’s time to start enjoying the best root apps for Android.
FAQs
Rooting makes it possible to achieve much more complex customizations than you’re used to. You can control your CPU and RAM, customize your UI, remove apps you otherwise wouldn’t be able to uninstall, use apps that provide root features, and more.
Manufacturers don’t like when you tinker with their devices’ software. This can create issues, and these wouldn’t be their fault. Most manufacturers will likely avoid respecting a warranty claim if you’ve rooted a device, especially if this was the cause of whatever issue you started the claim for. That said, some argue it’s illegal to void the warranty due to rooting, in some jurisdictions. You might be able to argue this in court, but no one really wants to take a company to court for a warranty issue. At the very least, rooting your phone may cause a headache, even if you did nothing wrong.
Of course you can. The real question is whether you should. If you are to sell a rooted phone, make sure you tell the new owner about this. He can then decide if he wants to take the risk. Additionally, it’s possible to unroot a phone and take it back to its factory settings. This might be a better alternative, unless the new buyer strictly wants a rooted phone.
No. You will have to flash the stock software to remove root. In fact, this used to be seen as a feature. Some applications are able to stick around, even if you perform a factory reset. This is great for security apps.
Rooting, in and of itself, should not erase any of your data. That said, you might have to give your phone a clean install if anything goes wrong, or if the root process for your phone happens to require a factory reset.
There are multiple ways to check if a device is rooted, but if you can’t figure this out, chances are you don’t want to deal with complex methods. The easiest way to check if your phone is rooted is through an app. Root Checker is one of the most popular ones.
