Almost every app you install on your Android device connects to the internet to send and receive data. This can be a huge deal if you are on a limited data plan. On the flip side, the smartphone in your pocket is no less than a computer, you have a lot of personal stuff like photos, videos and you do a lot of other things like paying bills online, accessing your bank accounts, managing your social accounts, access important emails, etc. So, to protect your device, restrict, and keep an eye on what apps are connecting to the internet, you are going to need a firewall, just like on computers. In case you are wondering, here is how you can install and configure a firewall on any Android device.
To add firewall on Android, we are going to install a free app called NoRoot Firewall. As you can tell from the name, the app needs on root permissions. Since the app doesn’t need any root permissions, it can be used on any device.
In case you are wondering, the inner workings of this app are simple. Once you install the app, it will create a local VPN and diverts all the internet traffic through that local VPN so that it can monitor the requests and allow or deny the connections according to the rules set by you.
Install and Configure Firewall on Android
To configure the firewall on Android, you first need to install the app. So, head over to the Play Store and install NoRoot Firewall. After installing, open the app and tap on the button “Start” the firewall.

Under the Apps tab, you can select the apps that can access the internet via WiFi and mobile data. The good thing is, NoRoot firewall even allows you to restrict apps based on WiFi or mobile data plan. To allow an app access the internet, simply select the checkboxes under the WiFi and/or mobile data.

To see what apps are being connected to the internet, navigate to the “Access Log” tab. Here you will find all the apps that are connected to the internet.

The above action will take you to the Custom Filter screen, here, configure your custom filter and then tap on the button “Ok” to save the changes.

Finally, if you want to stop the firewall, then go to the home screen and then tap on the button “Stop” to stop the firewall. As soon as you stop the firewall, all the apps installed on your Android device will have access to the internet, be it via WiFi or mobile data.
That’s all there is to do and it is that simple to install and configure firewall on Android.
Do comment below sharing your thoughts and experiences and thoughts about add a firewall on Android.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
(1) Can Android Firewall completely protect my privacy?
No — nothing can completely protect your privacy.
will do its best, but it is limited by the fact it must use the VPN service.
This is the trade-off required to make a firewall which does not require root access.
The firewall can only start when Android «allows» it to start,
so it will not offer protection during early boot-up (although your network may not be loaded at that time).
It will, however, be much better than nothing, especially if you are not rebooting often.
If you want to protect yourself more, you can (at least in theory) disable WiFi and mobile data before rebooting,
and only enable them on reboot, after the firewall service has started (and the small key icon is visible in the status bar).
(2) Can I use VPN applications while using Android Firewall?
If the VPN application is using the VPN service,
then no, because Android Firewall needs to use this service, and Android allows only one application at a time to use this service.
(3) Can I use Android Firewall on any Android version?
No, because the method addDisallowedApplication
is being used, the minimum required Android version is 5.0 (Lollipop).
(4) Will Android Firewall use extra battery power?
No, unlike most of the similar closed source alternatives.
Unfortunately this is not possible without using significant battery power
and adding a lot of complex code to do network translation from OSI layer 3 to layer 4
(and thus implementing a TCP/IP stack), which will inevitably introduce bugs as well.
This is how most (all?) other no root firewalls work.
Android Firewall is unique, because it doesn’t implement a TCP/IP stack and is therefore both highly efficient and simple.

Root

2. AFWall+ (Android Firewall +)

3. NetPatch Firewall

4. InternetGuard Data Saver Firewall

Compatibility
The only way to build a no-root firewall on Android is to use the Android VPN service.
Android doesn’t allow chaining of VPN services, so you cannot use NetGuard together with other VPN based applications.
See also this FAQ.
NetGuard can be used on rooted devices too and even offers more features than most root firewalls.
Some Android versions, expecially not updated Samsung Android versions, have a buggy VPN implementation,
which results in Android refusing to start the VPN service in certain circumstances,
like when there is no internet conncectivity yet (when starting up your device)
or when incorrectly requiring manual approval of the VPN service again (when starting up your device).
Unfortunately these Android bugs cannot be worked around by NetGuard.
Filtering mode cannot be used on CopperheadOS.
NetGuard will not work or crash when the package com.android.vpndialogs has been removed or otherwise is unavailable.
Removing this package is possible with root permissions only.
NetGuard is supported for phones and tablets only, so not for other device types like on a television or in a car.
Wi-Fi or IP calling will not work if your provider uses IPsec to encrypt your phone calls, SMS messages and/or MMS messages,
unless there was made an exception in NetGuard for your provider (currently for T-Mobile and Verizon).
I am happy to add exceptions for other providers, but I need the MCC codes, MNC codes and IP address ranges your provider is using.
As an alternative you can enable the option ‘Disable on call‘, which is available since version 2.113.

“Look no further for your Android firewall. Mobiwol NoRoot Firewall can be used to save battery, reduce data usage so you stay within your data plan, and secure your privacy by limiting the network access permissions required by apps.
Install Mobiwol No Root Firewall for Simplified Android Security
IMPORTANT: In the last update, a NEW NOTIFICATION ICON was added for STABILITY. We are working on finding a way to retain the stability without the icon, but please be aware that THIS IS NOT AN ISSUE.
Why does Mobiwol No Root Firewall show as if using a VPN connection?
This is superficial. We’ve used technology available to us from within the VPN packaging module offered by Android to be able to gain visibility to your applications’ network activities and apply firewall rules without having to ask for root permissions like other Android Firewall apps. However, no actual VPN connection is being made, no data is being sent externally by our application, and we do not tamper with the security of your personal data, so you can continue using your apps with peace of mind, and confidence that you will not end up with a higher than usual data bill at the end of the month.
Why Can’t I accept the VPN Prompt?
You will need to select the checkbox first and then the button becomes enabled. If you are having problems selecting the checkbox, it is likely that you have another app that creates an overlay on the active screen that is preventing you from selecting the checkbox.
These two threads explain the problem further and give some examples of apps that do this-
Why does Mobiwol top the data usage chart?
It’s an illusion. Mobiwol uses your device’s VPN package to create a firewall. As every data packet sent or received by your apps passes through the VPN, all the incoming and outgoing data traffic gets attributed to Mobiwol.
The good part, however, is that Mobiwol now comes with its own Data Usage feature which allows you to check data usage for each app. To view the usage, choose Data Usage from the home screen.
***VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO TRANSLATE MOBIWOL***
Thanks to everyone who has already contributed to our translation project! We’ll soon be releasing an update with localization for Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German, Turkish, Hungarian and Swedish.

If you have a high-speed Internet connection but notice that your web browsing speed isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be, then your problem may lie in the DNS. By optimizing your device’s DNS records, you can find the fastest routes for your data packets to take when traveling the Internet. It won’t boost to your download/upload speed, but in some cases it can result in quite a noticeable improvement in web browsing time.
At times, you may experience slow hiccups while trying to use the internet from your device. Sometimes, these problems can be attributed to your provider’s DNS settings because your ISP may not always have the best DNS server speeds.
Your default DNS server directly affects how fast you’ll be able to connect to a website. So choosing the fastest server according to your location will help speed up browsing.
With DNS Changer, you can find the fastest DNS server and connect to it with just one touch!
So your browsing speed and gaming experience (ping and latency) can be improved. (But you should remember that DNS settings will not affect your internet download / upload speed but response time)
Test results showed a 132.1 percent improvement from using Google’s DNS servers over using the stock DNS servers, but in real world usage, it might not be exactly that much faster. Still, this one tweak might get you finally feeling like you have a blazing connection to the internet!

LostNet NoRoot
