In the meantime you should scan your computer with your Anti Virus program.
Post back anything that is found.
Have you checked to see if it still does it in clean bootup mode as it could be one of the startup items/non MS services.
Hi Tomken.. I tried the clean boot up mode and no change it still won`t shut down on its own .. I have to push the power button.. regards.
While you’re waiting for the BSOD guys to get to you, you could also check for any yellow alerts in Device Manager/View/Show hidden devices, not forgetting to expand the Non Plug and Play Drivers section.
Have you downloaded any progs or updated any drivers recently ?
Not that I know of only windows updates has done their updates normally .. but any way I ran also a malawarebytes scan and nothing there either.. thanks and off to bed now its nearly midnight so will be here tomorrow to see what else can be done to help if any thing.. have a good day there and thanks for your help..
Can you install this please: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=6676 it might help the slow/incomplete shutdown problem.
Hi Satrow just another note.. when I went to systems and device managers there was this yellow exclamation mark and an unknown device there so I clicked properties and it said this.. ROOT\LEGACY_SASKUTIL\0000 I have no idea what it is or how to remove it or if its needed.. that other one on previous message ERUNT I did a search and its no files can be found.. just another added message to you thanks so much for helping if you can..
It would seem that this is part of superantispyware from what I can make out and doesn’t interfere with anything (?)
If you do have this antispyware installed, then use the relevant uninstaller that’s linked, to see if that stops the hangs and if it doesn’t, reinstall else leave it off and find something else.
Looks like the ERUNT.EXE is something that you’ve downloaded or came packaged with something else that you may have downloaded at some time. This is one of the reasons when downloading any prog, you should always use the Custom install or at the very least, read before clicking on Next/Install and uncheck any boxes that give something you haven’t asked for and in some cases, clicking on Decline (which can be misleading) does not void the original prog download.
Take a complete registry backup using ERUNT

Hi Tom.. I must have had that super anti spyware on and took it off with revo uninstaller.. somehow it still stayed there in the device managers.. well I did that uninstall and its ok not in device managers now but the computer still hangs when closing down.. wont close at all ..don`t worry too much as I have taken a lot of your time here.. prob a software problem.. who knows .. thanks for your help ..
Thank you so much Tom .. and so glad that you don`t think this is a waste of time.. nothing works so I really think I might save the things I need on the computer and my email addresses and do a full system restore back to factory settings.. I know at least it will have all the proper software on it then and can load what I need when I need.. do you think this is a good idea? this is all that seems wrong with it now I have to push the power button at night to shut it down completely.. I tried all the other programs you said and none worked I really feel that a bios is not in order or the registry is all out of whack for some reasons.. thanks for your help..
When I find restoring to an earlier date to try and resolve a problem doesn’t work or nothing else does either, then a HDD recovery is usually my next step.
At least then, you know you’ve wiped the slate clean and gotten rid of the bugs.
Best of luck with the reset.
Hi Tom.. thanks again for your help and reply to me and I`ll let you know in due course how I get on ok.. you`ve been a great help thank you so much.. bye for now..

Hi Lorraine and thanks for the update.
I’m pleased you were able to resolve this without the chew of having to do a HDD recovery and it’s a pity neither of us thought of a chkdsk /r sooner, but your update on this should be of help to others who may find themselves with the same problem (including myself 🙂 ).
I don’t have anything else to suggest regarding the folders problem.
We can clean up the tools and I’ll give you some tips along with a link to our XP forum.
You can start a topic there and the Windows guys should be able to help you. When you post there please include a link to this topic so they can see what we’ve been up to.
You can find the XP forum here
From your desktop, please delete, if present
- any notepads/logs that we created
- MBR.dat
- aswMBR.exe
- DDS
- SystemLook
•Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
•Click on Uninstall.
•Confirm with yes.
* Create a new restore point
- Go to Start — All Programs — Accessories — System Tools — System Restore.
- Click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
- In the text box labeled Restore Point Description, type a name for this restore point
- click create
* Remove old restore points
- Go to Start — All Programs — Accessories — system tools.
- Launch the Disk Cleanup tool and let it run.
- When it finishes a box with tabs will appear, select the more options tab.
- On this tab you will find a section for System Restore.
- If you press the Clean Up button for that section, Windows will delete all restore points except for the most recent one.
Open OTL then click the Clean Up button. You may get prompted by your firewall that OTL wants to contact the internet — allow this. A cleanup.txt will be downloaded, a message dialog will ask you if you want to proceed with the cleanup process, click Yes. This will do some clean up tasks and delete some of the tools you have downloaded plus itself.
I suggest you keep MBAM. Keep it updated and use it regularly.
Some Recommendations and prevention tips
Basic security consists of 1 antivirus program, 1 resident antispyware program, 1 on demand antispyware program and a firewall. You have those providing you are using a firewall or are behind a router.
* If you are behind a router Windows firewall should be fine. Otherwise a 3rd party firewall with outbound monitoring is recommended.
Click FIREWALL for links and tutorials to good, free and paid for firewalls. (Note: Zone Alarm is becoming bloatware, IMO)
You should also use Spyware Blaster to help immunize your computer.

Besides the Hosts file information, there are links to a very good updated hosts file, a host file manager. and some programs that can protect your hosts file.
HOSTS
Please read the info on disabling the DNS Client before installing a custom hosts file.
-Secure your Internet Explorer
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
- Click once on the Security tab
- Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
- Click once on the Custom Level button.
- Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
- Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
- Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
- Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
- Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
- Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
- When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
- If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
— Keeping your Windows up-to-date is crucial to your computer’s security. Please go to the Windows Update Site (using Internet Explorer) and download and install all critical updates on a regular basis
— Make sure you have reset Automatic Updates to your chosen option. Click your start button > Control Panel > System > Automatic updates tab.
— Keep your antivirus program updated, as well as any other security programs you have.

I was going to attempt to copy those registry keys and send them to you, but I do not have a Windows XP machine available — someone else with XP may be able to do this.
Don’t know if that would work or not, but I think it may be worth a try.
And, don’t convert the minidump file in any way — just grab a couple of the most recent files, zip and attach them in their raw format.

Paste the content of the following code box into notepad, then save to somewhere convenient as All Files (*.*) — AFDfix.reg
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AFD] "DisplayName"="AFD" "Description"="AFD Networking Support Environment" "Group"="TDI" "ImagePath"="\\SystemRoot\\System32\\drivers\\afd.sys" "Start"=dword:00000001 "Type"=dword:00000001 "ErrorControl"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AFD\Parameters] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AFD\Security] "Security"=hex:01,00,14,80,90,00,00,00,9c,00,00,00,14,00,00,00,30,00,00,00,02,\ 00,1c,00,01,00,00,00,02,80,14,00,ff,01,0f,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,00,01,00,00,\ 00,00,02,00,60,00,04,00,00,00,00,00,14,00,fd,01,02,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,00,\ 05,12,00,00,00,00,00,18,00,ff,01,0f,00,01,02,00,00,00,00,00,05,20,00,00,00,\ 20,02,00,00,00,00,14,00,8d,01,02,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,00,05,0b,00,00,00,00,\ 00,18,00,fd,01,02,00,01,02,00,00,00,00,00,05,20,00,00,00,23,02,00,00,01,01,\ 00,00,00,00,00,05,12,00,00,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,00,05,12,00,00,00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AFD\Enum]
Set a system restore point first, then double click and allow the merge.
Upon rebooting, the HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_AFD key will be automatically created. -
Wow! AFDfix.reg worked! I’m back online! Both deleted keys were created.
Many thanks for your help in solving this. Now to figure out if what Superantispyware detected is still there.
Trojan.Agent/Gen-Sirefef was detected by it but MSE said system32 files and folders were clean.Again, Thank You!
-
An interesting glitch occurred after the successful fix.
I updated MSE and scanned the system32 directory and got a clean scan.
Updated Superantispyware free edition and quick scanned to see if it would again find the malware. (Trojan.Agent/Gen-Sirefef) The scan stopped progressing after a few seconds. Ctl-alt-del could not stop the applicaton saying the system had it locked. It did not report it as «not responding». I did a restart from the start button that proceeded normally. Upon reboot the network was again unavailable. I found the afd.sys file missing again and the HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\AFD key gone. The other key remained. A found new hardware message came up which the system could not driver. A yellow ? unknown device — Device manager days it’s Device Instance ID is ROOT\LEGACY_SASKUTIL\0000
There is a key in HKLM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\ROOT of that same name.
A couple of the parameters have values. I’ll delete it after a few days.I uninstalled Superantispyware and re-fixed the problem.
Wierd, eh? I hope this does not recur.
Once again thanks for the support.
